By matchday, the roads leading to the stadium were painted in red and blue. I asked supporters one simple question: “Who made you a fan of your club?” The answers varied, but somehow were all the same. Some answered with “My dad.” Others said, “My abuelito.” And some just said, “My whole family.”
Instead of talking about trophies first. They talked about people.
And I understood exactly what they meant. My dad was a professional fútbol player and spent many years working with teams far from home. As a teenager, I became a Pumas fan and followed the team for years, traveling wherever they play. On the field, players lifted the trophy as fans leaned over the barriers hoping for one last photo, one last signature, one last memory to take home.
Around me I kept hearing the same phrases: “Un saludo para mi familia en Michoacán.” or “Vine desde Arizona.” or “Llegué desde Colorado.”
A worthy champion was crowned, but the weekend felt like more than a final. It felt like a celebration of everything that had been passed down: club colors, chants, family traditions, and a love for fútbol carried across generations and borders. For one weekend in California, home was in the stands.
