Dominik Mysterio Talks SummerSlam, AAA & Being Proudly Mexican

Dominik Mysterio may be part of a wrestling and lucha libre legacy through his family, but the 28-year-old is building his empire on his own terms. On Sunday, August 3, 2025, at SummerSlam 2025’s first two-day weekend at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion will defend his title against AJ Styles. He has also teamed up with Chase Freedom to not only get himself ring-ready, but to ensure his fans have the utmost experience at this weekend’s main event.

The Mexican-American spoke to Remezcla about his Chase Freedom partnership, SummerSlam, the 20th anniversary of the legendary Eddie Guerrero custody match with his father Rey Mysterio, and getting to represent the culture in and out of the ring.

The spotlight is on ‘Dirty Dom,’ who, just over a week after his fifth appearance at SummerSlam, will enter the ring at Triplemanía XXXIII in a Fatal Four-Way for the AAA Mega Championship against El Hijo del Vikingo, Dragon Lee, and El Grande Americano on August 16, 2025, in Mexico City’s Arena CDMX. This comes after his surprising debut at AAA’s Alianzas event on July 25, where he declared he would become the “King of the Luchadors.”

“It was really special for me, being a third-generation Mysterio, being able to go out to AAA and cement myself in the history books there. I had never done anything with AAA only the Worlds Collide stuff,” Dominik Mysterio shares with Remezcla. “My great-uncle was able to wrestle there, my deadbeat dad started there, and now I had the opportunity to become the first-ever Mysterio to become El Mega Campeon. That’s solidifying myself as the greatest Mysterio of all time, which is something I’ve been claiming and trying to do for the past five years. I feel like this would really put the stamp on it.”

Dominik isn’t worried about defending his Intercontinental Championship title against Styles because his partnership with Chase Freedom will not only have his outfit right, but will also have him relaxing on his road to Sunday’s match with the ultimate needed self-care. Making the partnership the perfect tag team with the WWE star—and delivering main-event energy even outside the ring.

“Honestly, it made perfect sense for me because I love to shop—unfortunately, I do a lot of it. Being in the ring, I like to look good from head to toe, whether it’s what I’m wearing to my shoes. So the fact that I was able to partner with Chase and have my Freedom Unlimited card is super helpful, especially being on the road too,” he tells us. “Just constantly using it on a weekly basis, even on a everyday basis when it comes to food, rental cars, and hotels. It just made perfect sense for me, you know? Especially since I actually use my Freedom Unlimited card all the time.”

The California native is confident that he will remain the Intercontinental Champion at this year’s SummerSlam and that it’s his opponent who should be worried about what’s going to happen in the ring on Sunday.

“The fans can expect ‘Dirty Dom’ walking in and out as your Intercontinental Champion. But unfortunately, I don’t do much preparing. I feel like they have to prepare for me,” he expresses. “I relax with my Freedom Unlimited card—I’m going out and getting massages, going to spas, getting treatment. You know, sometimes you got to treat yourself. You got to make sure you’re feeling right. And I feel like I got to be at my most relaxed state to be able to do what I have to do, because AJ is the one that is under all the pressure. He’s facing a 20-year veteran on his 20-year anniversary as a Intercontinental Champion, and to throw the little cherry on top, he’s facing the greatest Mysterio of all time. So I think the pressure is on AJ.”

During our interview he also spoke about how proud he is of his Latino culture, despite folks second-guessing his Latinidad. Dominik might’ve been born in San Diego, but being less than an hour away from Tijuana (without traffic) keeps him as close to his roots as possible, and being able to speak Spanish allows him to defend himself in two languages and all worlds of wrestling and lucha.

“I feel like it helps me a lot because a lot of people don’t know I speak Spanish. Every now and then, you get those people saying, ‘Ey, mira es güero,’ they start saying things and I respond to them in Spanish, they’re surprised—like, ‘Whoa, you speak Spanish?,’” he describes. “For me, it’s really cool to dominate both languages, English and Spanish, and be able to switch back and forth—hablando español contigo, también puedo hablar inglés. Entonces, para mí, es muy fácil poder hablar los dos idiomas. It’s easy for me to go back and forth like that, and I think it’s really important—and really cool—that I can do that. I’m not one of those ‘yo sí sabo’ kids.”

Dominik could make history as the first Mysterio to ever win the AAA Mega Championship, but he already made history at eight years old during the first and only custody match in WWE history at SummerSlam 2005. The “Custody of Dominik” Ladder Match was between his father Rey Mysterio and the late Eddie Guerrero.

“I think it was really cool to be able to be a part of that storyline because there’s not a lot of people that can say they shared the ring with Eddie Guerrero. And I can be one of them—to say that I was in the same ring as Eddie Guerrero at the same time for that custody match,” he explains. “So for me, that’s really, really special. And the fact that I am a part of history when it comes. I’m pretty sure there’s no other kid in the world of wrestling that has been fought for in a custody match at SummerSlam. So for me, I’ll always be able to hold that, and it’s very special.”

WWE SummerSlam 2025’s first-ever two-day weekend kicks off on August 2nd and continues on August 3rd at 6 PM EST, with both nights streaming on Peacock.
