Nominations were announced this week for the 4th Annual Quirino Ibero-American Animation Awards. In the nine categories, the Latin American country with the most nominations is Mexico with six nods, followed by Argentina with four.

Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Costa Rica were also among the countries recognized. Spain leads all nominations with nine.

Competing for best animated feature are three Mexican films—Xico’s Journey from director Eric Cabello Díaz; A Costume for Nicholas from director Eduardo Rivero; and Monster Zone from director Leopoldo Aguilar. The fourth nominee is Nahuel and the Magic Book, a Chilean and Brazilian production, from director Germán Acuña. The film is also nominated for best animation design.

In Xico’s Journey, a girl named Copi, her Xoloitzcuintle dog Xico, and her best friend Gus go on a quest to save a mountain from an evil corporation.

A Costume for Nicholas tells the story of a 10-year-old boy with Down syndrome who attempts to use his collection of magical costumes to save his cousin from his scary nightmares.

Monster Zone follows a 15-year-old boarding school student who opens a portal to another dimension filled with unworldly creatures.

Nahuel and the Magic Book introduces audiences to a young boy named Nahuel who has a fear of the sea. When he comes across a mysterious book that he thinks can help him face his fears, he has no idea a warlock is also after it.
