We have humongous news for all you N.O.C (nerds of color)! Umberto Gonzalez over at Heroic Hollywood reports that we’ll likely see Miles Morales hit the big screen in an untitled animated film due out in 2018. While Sony Pictures has yet to confirm the news, there’s probably some truth to this rumor since Gonzalez is well known as a reliable source of studio intel.
If this planned feature comes to fruition, it will mark the first time that the cinematic version of Spider-Man is not Peter Parker, making way for Morales – the half Puerto Rican, half African-American superhero. For comic book movies, it’s a groundbreaking move. As The Wrap reported recently, Marvel and other studios have made few attempts at bringing Latino superheroes to the silver screen.
Morales made his comic book debut back in 2011, and even though there’s been two different cinematic iterations of Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland) since then, Morales still remained only on paper. Though it’s not a live-action version, the rumored project written by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, is headed to multiplexes — a distribution channel often denied to most animated superhero films. With the duo behind Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, The Lego Movie, and the upcoming The Lego Batman Movie on board, the Miles Morales flick is in good hands.
