A month after actress and director America Ferrera (Superstore) posted a video urging Latinas to audition for the lead role of her upcoming feature film I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, the casting process continues.

The production is now casting two more characters – Juanga and Lorena.

“Here’s everything you need to know to audition for Juanga & Lorena in #IAmNotYourPerfectMexicanDaughter,” a tweet from Netflix reads. “Sound like you? Apply now!”

In the open casting call, Juanga is described as a “Latinx male, senior high school student” who is “queer, lives out loud, could fist-fight anyone and win, and is comfortable in his own skin.” Lorena is a “Latinx female, senior high school student” who is “fun-loving and carefree on the surface, but deep down, she is smart and tough as weeds.”

During the film’s first casting call, America Ferrera looked for an actress to portray Julia Reyes, a determined teenager with traditional Mexican immigrant parents who wish she were more like her sister Olga, their “perfect Mexican daughter.” The casting call received so much interest that the production created a new email account to manage the response.

The new casting call for Juanga and Lorena also encourages first-time performers to apply for the roles. Those interested can email PerfectDaughterSubmissions@gmail.com for more information.

I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter is based on Erika L. Sánchez’s bestselling novel of the same name and adapted by screenwriter Linda Yvette Chávez (Gentefied).
