The final day of the American Film Institute (AFI) Latin American Film Festival was last week, but AFI isn’t the kind of organization that only gives Latino-themed movies on one platform to be seen.
The AFI Fest, taking place October 15-22, released its full lineup Tuesday afternoon and it, too, has a handful of Latino films that it will screen during the week-long virtual event.
Included in this year’s AFI Fest is Mexican filmmaker Michel Franco’s award-winning crime drama New Order (Nuevo orden), which won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Venice Film Festival. The film touches on themes of socioeconomic division and civil unrest and stars Mexican actors like Diego Boneta (Terminator: Dark Fate), Naian González Norvind (TV’s Gotham) and Mónica Del Carmen (Babel).
In Mexican filmmaker Yulene Olaizola’s drama mystery Tragic Jungle (Selva trágica), a woman from Belize tries desperately to escape from a white British landowner and ends up in the Mayan rainforest where she awakens a mythical and vengeful spirit. The film won the Best Film in a Foreign Language award at this year’s Venice Film Festival.
In Lonely Rock (Piedra sola), an Argentine llama herder working on a remote mountainside goes on a spiritual journey when his animals continue to be slaughtered by an evasive puma.
Also playing at AFI this year is I Carry You With Me and the psychological horror The Intruder (El Prófugo) directed by Argentine writer/director Natalia Meta (Death of Buenos Aires) about a singer who experiences a disturbing identity crisis.
