If you think the trailer for the upcoming film Deep Water has a tone reminiscent of 1987’s Fatal Attraction, it probably won’t be a surprise that it’s by the same director. Filmmaker Adrian Lyne was nominated for an Academy Award for his work on the 80s thriller, and now he is taking some of that edge into a film starring Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck. It’s the first film Lyne has directed since his 2002 drama Unfaithful.

In Deep Water, de Armas and Affleck star as Melinda and Vic Van Allen, a wife and husband who seem to be coming to the end of their marriage when they start to play mind games with one another. The stakes rise when murder becomes part of the narrative.

In the trailer, it is obvious from the beginning that there’s something amiss between Melinda and Vic. We see Melinda sneaking off with another man at a party. It appears that Melinda is having an affair and that Vic is aware of it, but we’re not sure how much he knows.

In one scene, Vic confronts his wife when she doesn’t come home one evening and asks her why. Later, Melinda seems to answer all of Vic questions with just one sentence: “The truth is, if you were married to anyone else, you’d be so bored you’d kill yourself.”

Deep Water, starring Ana de Armas, premieres on Hulu on March 18.
