For superfans of English filmmaker Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), four years probably feels like a long time to wait for a new movie. Luckily, the first teaser trailer for Wright’s next opus, Last Night in Soho, should keep his devotees at bay until the movie hits theaters in October – or at least until the full trailer premieres.

Last Night in Soho is a trippy psychological thriller starring Anya Taylor-Joy (TV’s The Queen’s Gambit) and Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit) that centers around a woman who mysteriously finds herself in 1960s London where she seems to be inhabiting the body of another woman. From the trailer, it feels like a mix of the 2011 Oscar-winning film Midnight in Paris and the 1990s sci-fi TV series Quantum Leap.

McKenzie stars as Eloise, a young and seemingly troubled fashion designer who travels back in time. One night, she’s living in the present day, then next she’s stepping out into the city street where she sees a huge billboard for the 1965 James Bond movie Thunderball above a cineplex. The trailer uses the 1964 Petula Clark song “Downtown” to set the mood.

While roaming around downtown London, Eloise gets a glimpse of herself in a mirror and sees that she has become her idol, an aspiring singer named Sandy (Taylor-Joy). During the trailer, Eloise continues to make her way into the city where she is seen dancing and making out with men. Or is it actually Sandy who is having all the fun?

The preview, much of it covered in a red hue, teases the idea that there are a lot of secrets hidden in the past, and some can be very dangerous. At this point, we’re not sure what is more deadly – someone wielding a knife in the trailer or Sandy laying in bed wearing black lingerie. Whatever the case, we’re getting some major Black Swan vibes.
