Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) will do a little basting, braising, and maybe a little ghostbusting when she steps into the lead role in the psychological thriller House of Spoils.

The Prime Video and Blumhouse Television production follows an ambitious chef (DeBose) who opens her first restaurant on an estate where a powerful spirit of the previous owner begins to haunt her.

House of Spoils will be directed and written by Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy, the duo who worked together to make the 2019 crime-drama Blow the Man Down, which was another original film for Prime Video. According to Deadline, production on the film will start this fall.

“New adventures,” Ariana DeBose wrote on social media about the project. “So excited to dive in with Danielle, Bridget, Prime Video, Blumhouse, and our incredible producing team. Stepping out of my comfort zone.”

This production will be a reunion for Prime Video and Blumhouse. The companies produced the film series Welcome to the Blumhouse, which saw the release of eight genre movies in 2020 and 2021. They included Bingo Hell, directed by Gigi Saul Guerrero and Madres, a horror movie set in a migrant farming community.

“Pairing [Bridget and Danielle’s] thrilling script with Ariana’s incredible talent is a dream come true,” said Julie Rapaport, head of movies at Amazon Studios. “We could not be more excited to bring this story to the screen and to our customers around the world.”

Chris McCumber, president of Blumhouse Television, added: “We’re excited to see Ariana’s fresh, bold and spirited energy that won her an Oscar in a role that is completely different.”

Before Ariana DeBose takes her place in a creepy kitchen, she will be in the superhero movie Kraven the Hunter, the action film Argylle and the intergalactic thriller I.S.S.
