Actress Ariana DeBose (TV’s Schmigadoon!) has joined the cast of director Matthew Vaughn’s spy movie Argylle, which, according to Deadline, is currently in production in Europe.
Argylle tells the story of a spy novelist who turns out to be a secret agent in real life. The film is adapted from an upcoming book of the same name by Ellie Conway.
Although DeBose’s role in the film is currently unknown, Deadline calls her the “final addition” to the globetrotting thriller.
On Thursday, DeBose tweeted that she was “up to no good” alongside fellow cast members like John Cena, Bryce Dallas Howard, Catherine O’Hara, and Grammy-winning singer and first-time actress Dua Lipa, who wrote the film’s original title track and score. The rest of the impressive cast includes Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, and Samuel L. Jackson.
“We have assembled an absolutely stellar cast to inhabit each of the wonderfully original and captivating characters in this thrill ride of a story,” Vaughn told Deadline. DeBose seemed to agree when she tweeted that the cast was “bananas” and that she is “so stoked to be amongst them.”
DeBose, who earned a Tony Award nomination in 2018 for her lead role in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, will be seen next in Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story. DeBose plays the role of Anita, the girlfriend of a gang leader who forbids a member of a rival gang from seeing his sister. In the 1961 film, Rita Moreno won an Oscar for playing the role.
DeBose has also completed the sci-fi thriller I.S.S. that follows a group of American and Russian astronauts who are given instructions by their respective governments to take control of a space station amid a global crisis.
Maybe going into space is just a metaphor for the future of DeBose’s acting career and the power of her range.
