This Aztec-Themed Video Game & Planned Movie Uses Revisionist History With Sci-FI Elements

A revisionist historical telling of the Aztec Empire is being produced as a video game followed by a feature film, according to Deadline.

The video game, Aztech Forgotten Gods, is coming this summer from Lienzo Gaming Studio based in Chihuahua, Mexico. It was created by Guillermo Vizcaino.

“There’s such a rich history behind the Aztecs and merging that with an anime-inspired futuristic story gave us the chance to make something really special,” Vizcaino says.

Aztech Forgotten Gods is set in a future where the Aztec Empire was never conquered. Instead, it became an advanced civilization, including its capital Tenochtitlan. The story turns sci-fi when extraterrestrials begin to land on the ancient city to take over. They disguise themselves as Aztec gods like Quetzalcoatl and Mictlantecuhtli to infiltrate the empire.

Along with the video game, another company is coming on board to adapt the story into a movie. Executive producers Yvette Yates Redick and Shaun Redick at Impossible Dream Entertainment want to make the adventure film Aztech, based on the video game. Shaun Redick produced the Oscar-winning films Get Out and BlacKkKlansman.

“With Aztech, it’s fun to envision what world building can be achieved through the many multi-dimensional characters, the mythology and vast cultural storylines,” Redick says.

Yates Redick is a Latina producer who has roots in Chihuahua. “I am proud to be collaborating with Lienzo and bringing to light the legends and rich history of Mexico with Aztech,” she says.

Currently, Impossible Dream is producing the Netflix film Day Shift, which will star Oscar winner Jamie Foxx (Ray) as a vampire hunter.
