It looks like reggaeton superstar Bad Bunny is settling into Hollywood nicely. The rapper is featured in the first trailer for the upcoming action-comedy Bullet Train, and he holds his own against veteran actor and Oscar winner Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood).
Directed by David Leitch (John Wick) and adapted from Kōtarō Isaka’s Japanese novel Maria Beetle (published in English as Bullet Train), the film follows a group of assassins on a high-speed rail in Japan trying to get their hands on a briefcase held by Brad Pitt’s character, Ladybug.
We’re not sure yet if Bad Bunny’s unnamed character is one of the main assassins, but he’s definitely on a mission to kill Ladybug during the preview. In the trailer, Ladybug boards the train, but decides not to bring a gun for the trip. “Every job I do, somebody dies,” he says. “I’m not that guy anymore.”
Ladybug probably wishes he was still “that guy” when he gets on the train and realizes how many other passengers want to kill him. That includes Bad Bunny’s character, who shows up at the 1:14 mark of the trailer wearing a patterned white suit, black shirt, red rose boutonnière, and huge belt buckle engraved with the word “Mexico.”
At this point, the Bee Gee’s 1977 song “Stayin’ Alive,” which has been playing for most of the trailer, switches to Spanish as an angry-looking Bad Bunny whips out a big knife and proceeds to try to stab Ladybug in the chest. Both characters crash through another glass railway door and land on the floor.
“You stabbed me?!” Ladybug asks, although Bad Bunny’s knife doesn’t actually pierce his skin. The duo continues to fight on the train with Bad Bunny taking some serious slashes at Ladybug, who blocks them with the briefcase.
The scene ends with Ladybug choking a bloody Bad Bunny with the briefcase and Bad Bunny saying, “We’ll ruin your life the way you ruined mine!” before tossing him over a bar. “Dude, I don’t even know you!” Ladybug tells him.
We know him. That’s Bad Bunny – and he’s now a movie star.
Bullet Train premieres in movie theaters on July 15, 2022.
