Brazilian American actress Barbie Ferreira announced through her Instagram stories that she is leaving Euphoria, thus not returning to the third season of HBO hit teenage drama where she plays Kat Hernandez.

“After four years of getting to embody the most special and enigmatic character Kat, I’m having to say a very teary eyed goodbye,” wrote Ferreira over an art by colleague Hunter Schafer. “I hope many of you could see yourself in her like I did and that she brought you joy to see her journey into the character she is today.”

Kat Hernandez has been a fan favorite since season 1. But in the sophomore season the character took a backseat, as happened also to Maddy Perez played by Alexa Demie; which Remezcla previously pointed out how both Latine characters were let down by the series.

Rumors of tension between Ferreira and showrunner Sam Levinson circulated the internet, to which the actress denied. Still, some reports claimed that she walked off the set on at least two occasions due to the narrative direction presented to her character. Ferreira was also missing during the season 2 red carpet, adding more fire to the supposed situation.

As expected, fans were devastated by the departure. Some felt like her character deserved better.

Others were saying they were going to pretend that the show ended after season one.

Meanwhile, some were speculating that the rumors about what happened on set weren’t just rumors.

And others thanked Ferreira for this iconic scene:

The second season of Euphoria has been nominated for 14 Emmys and was renewed for a third season. More recently, Barbie Ferreira was part of the Jordan Peele-directed horror film Nope (2022), which also starred Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, and Brandon Perea.
