The 2020 People’s Choice Awards on Sunday (Nov. 15) recognized fan favorites this year in film, TV, music and social media, and the winners included a handful of Latinx talent.
Jennifer Lopez was honored with the People’s Icon Award for her career in the entertainment and fashion industry.

“When I’m tired or beaten down, like a lot of us have been this year, it’s my family, my friends, my babies, and my fans…who have lifted me up when I couldn’t lift myself,” Lopez said during her acceptance speech. “I am so grateful to have you – to have that in my life.”

Lopez went on to talk about how thankful she is knowing that the true measure of success is not in how many movie tickets or records she sells. It’s something more meaningful to her.

“The true measure is in inspiring girls of all ages and of all colors from all around the world to know that you can be anything you want and do as many things as you want and to be proud of who you are and where you come from,” she said.

Broadway star Lin-Manuel Miranda won the Drama Movie Star of 2020 award for his performance in the film recording of the hit play Hamilton, which debuted on Disney+ earlier this year. Hamilton was also voted as the best Drama Movie of 2020.

The Comedy TV Star of 2020 award went to Sofía Vergara for her role as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in the ABC sitcom Modern Family. The comedy series ran for 11 years before its season finale aired in April.

Other winners included Becky G for Latin Artist of 2020 and Cardi B for Best Collaboration of 2020 for her song “WAP” with Megan Thee Stallion. Along with all the Latinx winners, the host of this year’s awards show was Demi Lovato.

“This year has been the longest three years of my life,” Lovato joked at the start of the show. “I binged seven seasons of Pretty Little Liars, got unengaged and then I went looking for aliens in the desert. So, basically, the same as everyone else.”
