Not only is CBS Television Studios developing a female-led Zorro reboot, it’s also backing an original show by a Latino creator. The studio signed a first-look production deal with Propagate, which is working on several new series, including Jorge Reyes’ Home.
Home — alongside Zorro — will air on NBC if it’s picked up. Overseen by Queen of the South co-producer and writer Reyes, Home tells the story of the Candelarias, a wealthy Puerto Rican family. When the patriarch dies and surprisingly leaves the family’s empire to his daughter, she’s forced to learn the inner workings of pro football and real estate as she struggles to keep her family together. The series holds significance for Reyes, who has made the Candelarias natives of Buffalo, New York.
“This project is not only based on my family, but it’s set in my hometown of Buffalo … so it’s immensely personal for me,” Reyes tells Remezcla in an email. “I couldn’t be more grateful to Ben Silverman, CBS [productions] and NBC for embracing the idea. I also take the responsibility of any shot to get more Latinx on television very, very seriously — as I’m sure every Latinx writer working here does.”
Reyes has made quite the name for himself on Queen of the South, which recently wrapped up its fourth season on USA. The show has amassed a devoted following and brings solid ratings to the network. This isn’t the first series Reyes has created. Back in 2004, he created Kevin Hill for UPN, which he “named after and based largely on” his brother Kevin, Reyes tells us. The series followed a lawyer who makes a dramatic lifestyle change after his cousin dies and leaves him his 10-month-old daughter, Sarah. The series ran for one season between 2004 and 2005.
