Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki Picks Up a Critics’ Choice Award, Is the Oscar Next?

At Sunday night’s Critics’ Choice Awards, Alejandro González Iñarritu didn’t pick up any awards for Best Picture or Best Director for The Revenant. But Emmanuel Lubezki didn’t go home empty handed. El Chivo won for Best Cinematography, which means his award season has gotten off to a good start.

In about a month, El Chivo could also be picking up his third straight Oscar (though we think the Academy should award him just based off his stunning Instagram account.) According to Gold Derby‘s group of experts, El Chivo has an 86 percent chance of winning for The Revenant.

The cinematographer, who counts Gen X classic Reality Bites as one of his first Hollywood movies, doesn’t often grant interviews, so Variety interviewed his colleagues to learn more about his process. Watch the video below, and/or check out our list of six things you may not have known about Lubezki.
