After 15 years, it seems the US’ Golden Age of Television boom is finally starting to creep south. With Netflix ramping up their original content in Mexico and making moves in Brazil and Argentina, it was only a matter of time before another player started stepping up to the challenge of premium TV in Latin America. And that player is now officially Fox Telecolombia, which has announced production on a massively ambitious project that will beat out Netflix’s upcoming 3% as the region’s first ever sci-fi cable TV series.
Entitled 2091, the series boasts some serious acting talent in the form of Narcos’ Manolo Cardona, and Angie Cepeda of Jane the Virgin fame. The story of a futuristic, game-obsessed society will also bring Star Trek-worthy spaceship sets and impressive production value to Spanish-language audiences more accustomed to the lowest common denominator from their local channels.
Taking place appropriately in the year 2091, the series evokes a world where rampant video game obsession has led the government to ban all games, inspiring a billionaire game fanatic to fly fellow gamers to an artificial moon where they can face off freely. Thanks to a recent outbreak of poké-mania, this all sounds more like January 2017, but it’s easy to forget that South America still hasn’t tasted Nintendo’s mass hysteria-inducing augmented reality phenomenon.
2091 will premiere on Fox Latin America in late October, adding to a growing slate of projects for Fox Telecolombia that includes the wildly popular period series Sitiados, and the recent bio-novela Celia.
