Diego Boneta (Luis Miguel: The Series), Belinda (Camaleones), and Luis Gerardo Méndez (Club de Cuervos) have been tapped to star in a miniseries about Francisco “Paco” Stanley, a popular Mexican TV host who was gunned down in Mexico City in 1999.
According to Deadline, the Amazon original series will cover the last day of Stanley’s life. It is unknown which characters Boneta, Belinda, and Méndez will portray.
“Starting 2023 with this project that has me very excited!!” Belinda wrote on social media. “Let’s go back to the ’90s.”
From his Instagram account, Boneta added: “There is no better way to start the year than with my [Prime Video LATAM] family and the hand of friends and colleagues I love!”
According to Deadline, production on the 6-episode miniseries will start early this year. Once completed, it will broadcast in more than 240 countries and territories across the globe.
“Excited to tell the story behind what we consumed at mealtime, every day on Mexican TV in the 90s,” Méndez posted on social media. “Let the games begin.”
Alonso Aguilar, head of Amazon Originals, Prime Video Mexico, said Stanley’s death was a “turning point” in Mexico when it happened nearly 24 years ago. “We at Prime Video feel very proud that this talented team of filmmakers has managed to convene a cast that will make history on Mexican television,” Aguilar said.
Stanley was killed outside a Mexican restaurant where he and his colleagues, Mario Bezares and Jorge Gil, had just eaten. Bezares and another colleague were arrested in connection to the murder but were later released. Another man, Luis Alberto Salazar Vega, was later arrested based on a former cellmate’s testimony. Bezares posted on his social media when news hit about plans for the upcoming series.
“The production of the series has not sought me for any permit or agreement situation,” he wrote. “I have nothing to declare. I have nothing to say.”
