Diego Luna’s Andor has yet to get a firm release date, but there are already plans for a second season. Both star Luna and showrunner Tony Gilroy discussed the show with Vanity Fair for their Star Wars cover story, and confirmed that prep for a second season of the show, which is set to have a 12-episode first season, is already underway.

For Gilroy, however, it feels less like a second season, and more like the second half of a novel. “This first season is about him becoming a revolutionary, and the second 12 episodes take him into Rogue One,” he teased. The obvious conclusion to this tease is that, for Season 2, introducing Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO, Cassian’s droid companion, will be essential. Tudyk will not show up in Season 1 of Andor, but there’s no way the story ties with Rogue one without him.

But the first season is not devoid of story – as it will follow Cassian being recruited into the Rebellion and will also delve deeper into the backstories of some Star Wars characters that have been around for a while, but haven’t gotten as much development, like Mon Mothma. This is particularly interesting because Gilroy promised that some of what we think about these legacy characters is “really all wrong.”

And as for Cassian himself, Gilroy also shared that “Our show starts with a very simple, almost film noir situation for a thief, a skeevy kind of guy who gets in big trouble trying to sell something to save his ass,” which will lead into Cassian being recruited on what Gilroy calls “the worst day of his life.”

Even Rebel heroes have to start somewhere. And we’re really, really looking forward to the beginning of the story for Cassian Andor.

Andor is set to arrive on Disney+ in 2022.
