We haven’t seen the last of Cassian Andor, the heroic character first played by Mexican actor Diego Luna back in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Things didn’t end well for the rebel officer in the successful film, so now Disney is going further back into the origins of the Star Wars universe for a new episodic series.
The show is being developed for the studio’s very own streaming service, Disney+, where fans will be able to access beloved classics alongside content created exclusively for the platform. This new sub chapter in the franchise’s timeline will focus on Andor’s early days working with the Rebellion, and will serve as a sort of companion prequel to Rogue One.
Via press release, Luna said going back to reprise the role is very special for him. “I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply,” said the actor.
Luna will be seen next in Oscar-winner Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk, the director’s follow-up to Moonlight, in a small part. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on December 14.
More details on Disney’s new venture to compete with Netflix will be revealed early next year, so don’t be surprised if some of your favorites animated features and shows start disappearing from the streaming giant’s site.
The Star Wars series centered on Cassian Andor will start shooting in 2019.
