Disney’s ‘Mija’ Screening at Theaters for Free This Week – Here’s Where You Can See It

“It takes a lot of courage to make your own path.” It’s the first line in the trailer for the documentary Mija, which tells the story of Doris Muñoz, a music talent manager maneuvering her way through the world as the only member of her family who is documented. It also follows Muñoz’s mentee, Jacks Haupt, a singer who is also a daughter of undocumented immigrants.

Directed and produced by Isabel Castro, Mija premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year where Castro was nominated for the NEXT Innovator Award. It was picked up by Disney and will debut on the Disney+ platform on September 16, 2022.

Before it begins streaming, moviegoers in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City can see the film for free at one of their local theaters through this Thursday (August 11).

The theaters screening the film for free are the IFC Center in New York City, The Roxie Theater in San Francisco and the Laemmle Monica, and Laemmle Glendale in Los Angeles.

“Our goal is to build global empathy through authentic storytelling and to embrace the creative nonfiction form,” Marjon Javadi, VP of Documentary Film and Docuseries for Disney Original Documentary told Variety. “We want to show real-life journeys and real-life stories about inspiration and hope.”

Earlier this year, Remezcla called the film “full of heart” and a “must-see” documentary. “What Mija does is amplify the voices and the dreams of these American immigrant daughters and how they continue to strive forward despite the many obstacles they may face.”
