Two Latinos find themselves in the middle of a battle for the ages in the upcoming creature feature Godzilla vs. Kong.
The monster movie, which is the fourth in a rebooted franchise after 2014’s Godzilla, 2017’s Kong: Skull Island and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, pits the title titans against each other for the first time since they fought on the big screen nearly 60 years ago in 1962’s King Kong vs. Godzilla.
In the film’s first trailer, audiences get a glimpse of the behemoths coming face to face with one another for what is sure to be an extreme, heavyweight showdown. Along with a look at the iconic lizard and ape, the trailer also teases the characters played by Academy Award nominee Demián Bichir (A Better Life) and actress Eiza González (Baby Driver).
In a 2019 interview with Collider, González, who plays Maya Simmons, described her character as a “very smart woman behind a company.” Audiences get an early shot of Maya in the trailer looking out the window of a helicopter and onto the body of a captured Kong who is chained on an aircraft carrier. Later, when Godzilla makes an appearance and begins demolishing fighter jets, Maya looks out in horror at the destruction.
Bichir plays Walter Simmons, a character whose role in the film is yet known. However, with the same last name as Maya, we wonder if they might be playing father and daughter. During the trailer, Walter utters the line, “These are dangerous times,” which, based on the damage Godzilla and Kong cause in the two-and-a-half-minute preview, is probably a colossal understatement.
Godzilla vs. Kong is scheduled for release in theaters and on HBO Max on March 26, 2021.
