Pantaya’s El Juego de las Llaves (The Game of Keys) is an exploration of desire that respects the female gaze while traversing through the various intricacies of relationships, sex, and love. It feels complex, empowering, and like the kind of TV I’d like to see more of in 2021 and beyond. It’s also, most importantly to me as a member of the LGBTQ community, an unapologetic look at who we are and how that intersects with the nuances of a Latine upbringing.
These are only a few reasons why you should be exploring the Mexican comedy on Pantaya and Youtube. And hopefully, by the end of this post, you’ll want to dive right into the lives of these people and what happens to them once they start exploring who they are and what they can be.
1. A woman’s desire is at the heart of it.
El Juego de las Llaves doesn’t have time for antiquated beliefs about what a woman can or can’t have when it comes to her desires. And we’re not just talking about sex. Yes, engaging in carnal acts fueled by lust is core to this show. But there’s also the desire that these characters have when it comes to love, their careers, and the way they want to be treated by those they love or consider friends and family. All of it is possible and these women go for it.
2. It’s LGBTQ-inclusive.
There are few shows in 2021 that include Latine people having LGBTQ relationships. Sure, there’s Elite and Gentefied. But that’s not enough. El Juego de las Llaves gives us even more complicated and nuanced journeys of self-discovery when it comes to being part of the LGBTQ community. It shows what it means to finally find yourself, how to live your truth, and how there is nothing wrong with who you choose to love, no matter what your family thinks.
3. It explores different relationships.
El Juego de las Llaves takes its time in exploring the various relationships that people can have. It explores being monogamous, having an open relationship, and even being a throuple. And because of that, it makes for a show full of layers and understanding where people who have never been represented can see themselves, and those who have never seen relationships like these can gain a new understanding of its normalcy.
4. It feels like a fantasy come true.
The characters in El Juego de las Llaves love to explore any and all fantasies they may have. And as a viewer, it feels exhilarating and kind of fun to peel back the curtain on scenarios that we maybe have thought about once or twice but have never had the guts to tell anyone. And it does it all from a perspective that you can tell this wasn’t filmed for the male gaze. It’s a fantasy for everyone and how those desires change us when explored.
5. It’s messy, yet fun.
Things get dramatic and messy on El Juego de las Llaves. Exploration comes with consequences sometimes and that’s absolutely true for the characters of this show. With those consequences come shifts that upend the lives of those we love on El Juego de las Llaves. That creates a fun show that leaves you wanting more!
