Juan Osorio, producer of the unauthorized Vicente Fernández bioseries El Último Rey: El Hijo Del Pueblo, is doubling down.

Despite receiving a letter from the lawyers of the Fernández family asking TelevisaUnivision not to broadcast the series, Osorio is now saying that because the show’s ratings are doing so well, they are moving forward with a second season.

“This season lasts two weeks,” Osorio told hosts during an interview on De Primera Mano. “We finished on March 25 on the air, and we are already working on a second season.”

According to a press release from TelevisaUnivision, El Último Rey: El Hijo Del Pueblo debuted this week with 8 million viewers.

The series is based on the controversial book of the same name by writer Olga Wornat. In that book, Wornat connects Vicente Fernández and his family to an alleged drug trafficking and kidnapping plot. The latter of the two has already been addressed on the show.

Before the series debuted earlier this week, Fernández’s widow, María del Refugio Abarca Villaseñor, better known as “Doña Cuquita,” released a statement condemning the series and calling it “theft.” Before he died, Fernández signed a contract with Caracol and Netflix to produce and distribute a TV series on his life and career. That project, The Idol of the People, stars actor Jaime Camil (Jane the Virgin) as “El Charro de Huentitán.”

Who knows how this whole thing will turn out, but one thing is for certain: Osorio isn’t about to hit the brakes anytime soon.
