Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres won a Golden Globe in the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama category Sunday evening (January 5) for her role in the Brazilian film I’m Still Here. Her win comes 25 years after her mother, iconic Brazilian actress Fernanda Montenegro, became the first Brazilian actress to be nominated for a Golden Globe in the same category for her performance in the 1999 film Central Station. And it makes Torres the first Brazilian actress to win a Golden Globe.
“This is such an amazing year for female performances,” Torres said at the start of her acceptance speech. “So many actresses here [who] I admire so much.” Torres was specifically mentioning her fellow nominees: Angelina Jolie (Maria), Kate Winslet (Lee), Nicole Kidman (Babygirl) and Pamela Anderson (The Last Showgirl).
In I’m Still Here, Torres plays Eunice Paiva, a mother searching for answers after the disappearance of her husband during the military dictatorship in Brazil.
During her speech, Torres thanked the film’s director and her friend Walter Salles (“What a story, Walter!”) and dedicated the win to her mother, who turned 95 years old this past October. “She was here 25 years ago,” Torres said. “This is proof that art can endure through life, even in difficult moments.”

Torres added that I’m Still Here is “a film that helps us to think how to survive in tough times like this.”
With her Golden Globes win, Torres is now a favorite to land an Oscar nomination for I’m Still Here. Oscar nominations will be announced on January 17, 2025, so let’s hope we hear her name called as one of the five best performances of the year.
