Fernanda Torres is following in her mother’s footsteps — once again. Torres, who recently won a Golden Globe Award for her performance in I’m Still Here, in the same category her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, was once nominated, is now looking to do the same at the Academy Awards. She was nominated for an Oscar in the category for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
Torres and Isabella Rossellini, from Conclave, both joined their mothers — Fernanda Montenegro and Ingrid Bergman, respectively, becoming the fifth and sixth mother-daughter duo to be nominated for an acting Oscar.
In the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, Torres will be competing against Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Mikey Madison (Anora), and Demi Moore (The Substance). Torres’ nomination comes 26 years after her mother got nominated in the same category for 1999’s Central Station.
In I’m Still Here, Torres plays Eunice Paiva, a mother searching for answers after the disappearance of her husband during the military dictatorship in Brazil.

Torres posted a reaction on Instagram and spoke about the honor it was for herself but also for Brazil in Portuguese. Her caption read, “I thank everyone involved in I’m Still Here.” She went on to write, “To the audience who watched the film and to Brazil who supported and worked hard on social media for these nominations.”
The 97th Academy Awards are set to air live March 2, at 7 PM ET/4PM PT on ABC and Hulu.
