Their season might have been cut short by COVID-19, but One Day at a Time — ever the comeback kid — is back with one more a first for the show: a fully animated episode. The politics-centered episode was created entirely during lockdown, with each actor recording their own voices in their own homes and Rita Moreno asking her grandson to take videos of herself for animators to use as reference.

For this special occasion, Gloria Estefan and Melissa Fumero are reprising their roles as conservative (and 45 supporters) Tía Mirtha and cousin Estrellita who, along with Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tío Juanito, will force Penelope (Justina Machado) to find ways of talking about the upcoming election with these visiting family members. In addition to heartwarming storylines about dealing with right-wing Cuban family, the episode promises a parody of Estefan’s “Mi Tierra” performed by feuding sisters Mirtha and Lydia (Moreno).
