It’s crazy to think about how much the world has changed in the last three years: from Edward Snowden to Brexit and, of course, the apricot-faced conman who’s getting ready to step into the oval office next month. Indeed, the transformations have been so drastic that the folks over at Funny or Die went ahead imagined a scenario in which one unlucky individual awakens from a five-year coma to finds himself in the year 2018. That’s right – two years into President Trump’s first term.
Take a moment. Breathe. We know most you haven’t been able to fathom the guy’s inauguration, let alone a world two years deep into the Trumpocalypse; but before you hurt yourself thinking through this scenario, Funny or Die has gone ahead and done that work for us. What are we left with? A world with self-driving cars, three consecutive World Series wins for the Chicago Cubs, and Trump-crazy frat bros desperately scouring the land for a hit of burrito.
Suffice it to say the doctor ends up cleaning out the hospital’s morphine stockpile by the end of this three-and-a-half-minute sketch; but before you go tracking down pain pills on the dark web, Funny or Die didn’t actually intend this to be a vision of hopeless defeat. In fact, the bit ends with a simple exhortation: “Don’t take the easy way out. We need you. Get involved.”
