These days, it seems like anything is possible in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (thanks, Dr. Strange), but could actor Gael García Bernal really show up as the comic book character Werewolf by Night in the Oscar Isaac-led, Disney+ series Moon Knight?
Last year, Bernal was officially cast in an untitled Marvel Halloween special for Disney+ set to begin production early this year. While there were no details about the role that Bernal would play, rumors were that he could portray some version of Werewolf by Night, the title character of a Marvel comic book that ran from 1972 to 1977 and first introduced readers to the character Moon Knight.
Whether that comes to fruition or not, Marvel fans were flipping out last week when the second episode of Moon Knight premiered and featured a couple of curious Easter Eggs. At the 38:36 mark of the episode, the letters and numbers “WBN 0032” can be seen on the top of a double-decker bus. Some are theorizing that it references the Marvel comic book Werewolf by Night No. 32, which is the first issue that the character Moon Knight appears in.
There were also a couple of scenes in the first and second episodes that featured QR codes that, when scanned, led viewers to claim free copies of certain Werewolf by Night comic books, including issue No. 32.
If that wasn’t enough of a tease, during a recent interview with IGN Brasil, when asked what Latine characters he would like to see show up in Moon Knight, Isaac was guarded with his answer, but let the outlet know that “there are elements that we will see in the series that will make you happy.”
It’s all speculation, of course, but maybe “elements” means audiences will get more Easter Eggs over the next four episodes that could lead to Gael García Bernal’s Halloween special later this year. Or maybe it means Bernal will show up as Werewolf by Night for an epic Latine showdown with Isaac’s Moon Knight. Either way, let the howling begin.
