Actor and comedian George Lopez (El Chicano) was named as one of the newest cast members of The Underdoggs, a sports comedy movie starring actor and rapper Snoop Dogg (Day Shift).

According to Deadline, the movie is being billed as “The Bad News Bears in the world of youth football.” The Bad News Bears, of course, is a media franchise about an underdog youth baseball team. We jest, but maybe The Underdoggs never heard of Little Giants.

In Underdoggs, Snoop Dogg stars as Jaycen Jenning, AKA “2Js,” a former NFL superstar who agrees to coach a kids’ football team to stay out of jail. He hopes the move to pee-wee football can restore his washed-up career.

Lopez’s role is still unknown, but the veteran comedian will be joined by at least one other Latine cast member, Adan James Carrillo, who is portraying one of the young football players. Carrillo is the son of actor Erick Carrillo, who is best known for playing “First Cholo” in the 1997 music biopic Selena. His character delivered one of the film’s most memorable lines of dialogue, “Anything for Salinas!

Along with Snoop Dogg, Lopez, and the younger Carrillo, the cast includes Tika Sumpter (Sonic the Hedgehog 2), Mike Epps (The Upshaws), and Andrew Schulz (Crashing). The film will be directed by Charles Stone III (Drumline) and written by Danny Segal (Grown-ish) and Isaac Schamis (Grown-ish).

Lopez will next be seen early next month in his new NBC comedy series Lopez vs. Lopez alongside his real-life daughter Mayan Lopez. Next year, he will join the DC Universe in the superhero flick Blue Beetle.

The Underdoggs is scheduled for a theatrical release on October 20, 2023.
