While they may not always be recognized, we have a wealth of Latino talent in front and behind the camera. Mexican-Canadian director Gigi Saul Guerrero, who Variety listed as one of 10 Latinxs to Watch in 2019, is just one of the many exciting members of our community making big moves. Following her directorial entry for Hulu’s horror anthology, Into the Dark, she’s now set to take on her next horror project.
Orion Pictures tapped Gigi to direct 10-31, a horror film about a woman who takes her niece and nephew trick-or-treating and has her life upended. Inside a candy wrapper, there’s a note explaining that a killer is on the loose. Ian Shorr and Peter Gamble wrote the script based on a story by Laurie Ashbourne and Kathy Charles’ screen story. Eli Roth, Roger Birnbaum and John Zaozirny are producing the film, according to Deadline.
“This was a real page-turner of a script,” she said. “I instantly felt passionate about taking on this story and making it a thrilling and visceral ride for audiences on the big screen.”
For Gigi, 10-31 is just one of her several projects in the works. She has a first-look film and television deal with Blumhouse, where she will write and direct shows and feature films.
Outside of “Culture Shock,” the Into the Dark episode she directed, Gigi recently did an episode of USA’s The Purge, based on the Blumhouse feature of the same name. She also has her own production company, Luchagore Productions, under which she directed the films A Luchagore Christmas, Evil Dead in 60 Seconds and the short feature, El Gigante.
There’s no word on when 10-31 will start shooting or who is set to star as the young woman at the center.
