Want to know what’s inside Guillermo del Toro’s cabinet? The Oscar-winning director of The Shape of Water is gearing up to start production on his new Netflix anthology series Cabinet of Curiosities. Del Toro will serve as the executive producer and co-showrunner.
Coming along for the chilling ride is actress Elpidia Carrillo (Predator) and director & Oscar-winning cinematographer Guillermo Navarro (Pan’s Labyrinth). Carrillo and Navarro are part of a full team of actors, directors, and writers del Toro has personally chosen to work on the new series with him.
According to a press release from Netflix, Cabinet of Curiosities is a “collection of unprecedented and genre-defining stories meant to challenge our traditional notions of horror.” The series will be made up of eight episodes, including two original pieces by del Toro.
Known for his love of monsters, del Toro has kept audiences frightened and entertained since 1993 when his debut independent film Cronos was released and submitted by Mexico for Academy Award consideration in the Best Foreign Language Film (now Best International Film) category. Since then, the Guadalajara-born filmmaker has jumped between other indie films like The Devil’s Backbone and blockbuster films like Hellboy.
His next movie as a director is 2021’s psychological thriller Nightmare Alley, which follows an ambitious carnival worker (Bradley Cooper) who possesses the power to manipulate people.
Cabinet of Curiosities will be the first live-action series del Toro has been involved in since his 2014 FX series The Strain ran for four seasons. His other TV projects include the animated series Trollhunters, 3Below and Wizards.
