Although unconfirmed, Deadline is reporting that Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight), Mia Goth (Pearl), and Andrew Garfield (Tick, Tick Boom!) are in early talks to star in Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro’s live-action version of Frankenstein for Netflix.

Del Toro, who recently picked up his third Oscar for his stop-motion animation Pinocchio, is set to write and direct the film. While insiders told Deadline that del Toro has met with all three actors to talk to them about the project, there are no formal offers on the table, and del Toro is still working on the screenplay.

During an interview with NPR last year, del Toro talked about how intrigued he was as a kid the first time he saw the original 1931 film, Frankenstein, starring Boris Karloff. “This monster crossing the threshold, this anomaly seemed to embody everything that I thought was ‘wrong’ with me, in a beautiful way,” he said. “It was like a patron saint being discovered for me.”

Del Toro has always talked about making his own version of Frankenstein, but it looks like things might finally be moving forward if the casting news turns out to be true. On social media, users were fascinated by the possibility of Isaac, Garfield, and Goth, whose mother is Brazilian, boarding the project.

“The perfect director and perfect actors for this property (assuming Garfield is playing Victor Frankenstein and Isaac is playing the Creature),” one Twitter user posted.

Others think del Toro should reimagine the story and make Isaac and Garfield star as a same-sex couple and Goth plays the monster.

Or maybe Goth as Dr. Frankenstein. “Really hoping Mia Goth is playing Dr. Frankenstein,” someone tweeted. “Or the monster. She’d crush both.”

Some don’t even know Goth but are here for it because they trust del Toro.

Others are ready to declare this movie del Toro’s best yet.

And then there were some that remembered what happened after Shape of Water came out.

Bottom line is that we’re trying not to get too excited until this news is confirmed by Netflix, del Toro, or one of the actors.

Until then, we’ll be seating and freaking out like everyone else is right now.
