I’ll admit it: I was very upset when director/producer Guillermo Del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy) dropped out of the director’s chair of “The Hobbit” to focus on his own movies. The dream of a lifetime…deferred! But then a movie trailer for his next project “Pacific Rim” was finally released this week and all was forgiven!!
“Pacific Rim” stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, and Rinko Kikuchi who play pilots of giant robots known as Jaegers. Why are they piloting giant robots? To fight off hordes of giant monsters known as Kaiju who have invaded Earth via a portal deep in the pacific rim, silly!
The movie is Del Toro’s and writer Travis Beacham’s homage to Japanese monster and giant robot stories and it’s a beauty. This is nothing like Power Rangers, y’all! Check out those special effects and tell me it doesn’t look like Big O meets Neon Genesis Evangelion come to life.
And yes, longtime Del Toro collaborator Ron Perlman is in this too.
“Pacific Rim” arrives in theaters on July 12, 2013.
