Once again, we lose. Lopez vs. Lopez, one of the few remaining shows on TV not just starring talent from our communities but focusing on the issues that were affecting Latines, has been canceled by NBC after three seasons. The show starred George Lopez alongside his daughter, Mayan Lopez, and also featured cast members Selenis Leyva, Brice Gonzalez, Matt Shively, and Al Madrigal.

Debby Wolfe, another Latina, co-created the series with the Lopezes and served as executive producer.

The network also cancelled Night Court after three seasons, ahead of their upfront presentation in New York on May 12. The two comedies renewed for next season at NBC are Happy’s Place and St. Denis Medical. The network renewed the One Chicago shows and Law & Order as well, but has not renewed any other dramas.

A comedy very much in the vein of Roseanne, Lopez vs. Lopez focuses on a working-class, old-school Latino dad who moves in with his Gen Z daughter as they try to rebuild their relationship, one argument at a time. It feels like a very simple story, and perhaps that’s what made it so relatable. It was the type of broadcast comedies our communities rarely get to see—one that explored a dysfunctional family with an understanding of the thing that makes that family different, our Latinidad.

The cancellation of Lopez vs. Lopez is the second time a show with an all-Latino cast has been canceled in the past few days. Apple TV+ recently announced that Eugenio Derbez’s Acapulco would be ending after the upcoming Season 4. One of NBC’s other comedies, Happy’s Place, stars a Latina in a series regular role in Belissa Escobedo.

Meanwhile, ABC has Will Trent, led by Ramon Rodriguez, which was just renewed for a fourth season, and CBS’s NCIS stars Wilmer Valderrama, while Fire Country stars Kevin Alejandro and the show’s spinoff Sheriff Country will star Morena Baccarin. But all of that doesn’t make the loss of a show about a Latine family and the Latine experience, like Lopez vs. Lopez, hurt any less.
