Are you absolutely obsessed with Netflix’s reimagining of One Day at a Time, set to debut its second season next year? Then you might want to keep your eyes peeled for CBS’ new multi-camera/hybrid comedy from the show’s Cuban-American co-creator Gloria Calderon Kellett, History of Them.
In a piece originally published by Deadline, Calderon Kellett announced she will work with CBS TV Studios and Sony Pictures TV Studios on a pilot for a series which follows a multicultural relationship – “Latinx and white” according to the article – told through the eyes of the couple’s future daughter as she navigates their social media feeds. Like One Day at a Time this show is semi-autobiographical to Calderon Kellett’s life.
History of Them was at the center of an intense bidding war over the last few weeks and continues to cement the Cubana’s status as a top creator in the television industry. Her work on One Day at a Time, a new take on the 1975 Norman Lear sitcom, holds a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Before finding critical and commercial success with One Day at a Time Calderon Kellett was a playwright and soon transitioned to television, working on sitcoms like How I Met Your Mother, where she won an ALMA award in 2008, and other shows like Drunk History and iZombie. The purchase of History of Them is the first since Calderon Kellett signed an overall deal with Sony Pictures Television in June.
CBS’ commitment to produce the pilot will also help their own cache after taking fire earlier this year for their current television slate which fails to feature any significant females, either in leading roles or behind the camera.
It’s unknown when cameras will start rolling on History of Them. Season 2 of One Day at a Time is currently filming and expected to premiere on Netflix sometime in 2018.
