Isabela Merced (Father of the Bride) will be splitting her time between the Marvel and DC Universes. It was announced on Tuesday (July 11) that the 22-year-old star would join DC’s upcoming film Superman: Legacy in the role of the superhero known as Hawkgirl.

Superman: Legacy is scheduled to release in the summer of 2025 and will be directed by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy).

“[James Gunn] gave me the best birthday gift,” Merced posted on social media alongside a photo of a comic book version of Hawkgirl, who was first introduced in her full costume in 1941.

Joining Merced in the cast are Nathan Fillion (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) as Green Lantern and Edi Gathegi (The Harder They Fall) as Mister Terrific. It was already reported that the main roles of Superman/Clark Kent and Lois Lane would be played by David Corenswet (Pearl) and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel).

Last summer, Merced was confirmed to join the cast of the Marvel film Madame Web as webslinger Anya Corazon aka Spider-Girl. The Marvel movie stars Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) as the title character, a clairvoyant who is able to use her psychic abilities to see into the “spider world.”

Along with Superman: Legacy and Madame Web on her schedule, Isabela Merced has another potential blockbuster to prepare for – the sci-fi film Alien: Romulus directed by Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe). She also has the action thriller Ballerina Overdrive and the romantic drama Turtles All the Way Down on the horizon.
