Selena Gomez, Tanya Saracho, and Gabriela Revilla Lugo have an exciting new single-camera Latine comedy in the works called 15 Candles. The series will be a new take on the world of John Hughes‘ iconic 1984 film, Sixteen Candles.

According to Deadline, the new UCP and Peacock show “follows four young Latinas starting high school as they overcome their feelings of invisibility while exploring what it means to leave childhood behind through the lens of the traditional female coming-of-age rite: the quinceañera.” For so many, that description no doubt sounds identical to our own high school experience.

Saracho and Lugo will serve as both writers and executive producers, while Gomez also executive produces 15 Candles.

As soon as the news was announced, fans immediately showed their support of the new project on social media:

Gomez can most recently be seen as Mabel in Hulu’s hit comedy, Only Murders in the Building, which was renewed for a second season. She also lent her voice in Hotel Transylvania 4: Transformania. Saracho is best known for her work on the Starz series, Vida. Lugo’s notable credits include A Million Little Things as well as Palm Springs

As a Latine woman who felt represented for the first time by Selena Gomez’s Alex Russo in Wizards of Waverly Place, hearing this news was definitely a beautiful full-circle moment for me. It’s also exciting because plenty of people grew up with Sixteen Candles. Hopefully, 15 Candles will allow a new generation of young Latine women and girls to feel represented the same way that I did.
