Here’s When First Issue of Latinx Superhero Comic Book ‘America Chavez: Made in the USA’ Will Be Released

A few days after it was confirmed that actress Xochitl Gomez (TV’s The Baby-Sitters Club) would play the live-action version of the superhero America Chavez in the upcoming Marvel sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, more news about the lesbian Latina teenage comic character has been revealed.

Marvel will release its first issue of America Chavez: Made in the USA, a limited series comic book by writer Kalinda Vazquez and artist Carlos Gomez, in March 2021. The comic was delayed for a release this summer because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Chavez is considered the first Latinx American LGBTQ+ character to star in an ongoing series for Marvel.

“From the moment America Chavez was introduced into the Marvel Universe I was a fan,” Vazquez told ComicBook.com earlier this year. “It’s such an honor to have the opportunity to tell an American story, and I couldn’t be more excited to have been invited onto this project.”

Chavez was introduced to comic book fans as Miss America in 2011 and became a member of the Young Avengers, a group of adolescent characters with ties to Marvel’s main Avengers team. She was voiced by actress Cierra Ramirez (TV’s The Fosters) in an animated series of shorts called Marvel Rising.

The casting of Gomez, however, was met with some pushback since the character is Afro-Latina in the comics. Some people wondered why an Afro-Latina actress wasn’t chosen to portray the superhero.
