If you grew up in the ‘90s then The Little Mermaid has a special place in your heart. True confession: I cried while on the Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid all-ages ride this year! So I have no qualms about giving my expert opinion on the Spanish version of “Under the Sea.”

First, let me say, I’ve heard this tune sung by a variety of professional singers. From Broadway shows at Walt Disney World to heavy metal singers, and no version will ever top the original song by Samuel E. Wright. And, let’s give props where props are due: the song did win an Academy Award and a Grammy.

However, as a true believer that representation matters, I approve of the Latin American Spanish-language dub of “Under the Sea” 100 percent! Is it hilarious? Of course. Is it adorable? Hell yeah! The singer of this version is London-born Cubano Michael Cruz and his accent has some heavy Caribbean vibes, which goes well since the original song has deep Trinidad and Tobago influences. So perhaps I will continue singing the English version in the shower (don’t judge!), but I will definitely play the track from La Sirenita to my future offspring as it’s a great way to practice the language.

For added fun, watch the dub from Spain of the same song here.
