Liza Colón-Zayas is representing our culture in a huge way. After winning her first Emmy, the Puerto Rican actress expressed she had certain points to hit during her acceptance speech backstage.

After describing her acceptance speech as a surreal moment, Colón-Zayas says that she had more people to thank, and main points to bring up in the short televised time frame. “The main thing is that I wanted to express how in awe I am of them – of the people who supported me this whole time,” Colón-Zayas said backstage to the media. “That we feel seen as brown and black women. That we do not have an expiration date. And that we all vote. If I could have the microphone just once, that’s what I want to get across.”

In her televised acceptance speech, she sent a message to “all the Latinas who are looking at me. Keep believing and vote. Vote for your rights.”

The Bear actress won her first Emmy in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. The show follows her character Tina Marrero’s resilient journey from rookie cook to sous chef.

Up next, many watchers are looking forward to the next Emmys season, where her character’s breakthrough episode “Napkins” will be eligible for an award. “Napkins” is part of the show’s third season which portrays how Marrero started working at the starring restaurant.

Congratulations Liza Colón-Zayas!
