Netflix has released its latest trailer for its upcoming fantasy miniseries Maya and the Three and it’s exactly what we need in 2021!

Created by Mexican filmmaker Jorge R. Gutiérrez (The Book of Life), Maya and the Three follows Maya (Zoe Saldaña), a Mesoamerican-inspired warrior princess who goes on a quest to fulfill an ancient prophecy and save the world from a group of vengeful dark lords.

When Netflix released its first trailer last month, Remezcla noted that it was a welcomed surprise to see that Saldaña’s name was listed with an ñ. For most of her career, the Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy star has been credited as “Zoe Saldana.”

“If Zoe Saldaña was ever going to reclaim her name, it makes sense that it would come in a project like Maya and the Three,” Remezcla’s Lissete Lanuza Sáenz wrote. “One where she’s surrounded by people from her community.”

The new trailer doesn’t list the cast by name like the first one did, but it’s still packed with incredible, eye-popping visuals and intriguing cultural references. What’s most exciting is that it introduces audiences to the titular “Three” warriors of the film who join Maya on her journey.

First, we’re given a glimpse of Chimi (Stephanie Beatriz), the Skull Warrior, who describes herself as an “outcast of the Jungle Lands.” Chimi has short, white hair and her face is painted like La Calavera Catrina. Her weapon of choice is a bow and arrows.

Then, there’s Rico (Allen Maldonado), the Rooster Warrior from Luna Island, who seems a little on edge when he meets Maya. Finally, there’s Picchu (Gabriel Iglesias), a Hulk-ish warrior and man of few words who wears golden armor and carries around skull blades.

Later, audiences meet fiery main villain Lord Mictlan (Alfred Molina), the God of War, and Zatz (Diego Luna), the Prince of Bats, a handsome warrior who joins the team mid-adventure. “Ooey, ooey…el vampiro guapo,” Picchu says as he reacts to Zatz’s strong entrance.

With a roster of evil gods wanting to destroy Maya, she can use all the help she can get. “Nobody messes with mi familia!” she declares.

Maya and the Three will debut on Netflix on October 22, 2021.
