Actress Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) is making it a movie night with her new workplace comedy series. The 10-episode show for Netflix is called Blockbuster and will be set inside the last Blockbuster video store in America.
On Twitter, Fumero wrote that she was “Soooooo excited to begin this next chapter with friends I adore, especially the incredible @thatRamosgirl and an actor I’ve admired for a long time! Lets goooo!!”
The logline for the new series reads, “An ensemble comedy that takes place in the last Blockbuster Video in America, that explores what it takes – and more specifically who it takes – for a small business to succeed against all odds.”
In the series, Fumero will play Eliza, a mother whose marriage to her high school sweetheart isn’t going well. After studying at Harvard for one semester, she leaves the prestigious school to start a family and ends up working at Blockbuster. Created by Vanessa Ramos (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and written by David Caspe (That’s My Boy) and Jackie Clarke (Kenan), Blockbuster also stars actor Randall Park (WandaVision) as Eliza’s co-worker, Timmy.
Currently, there really is only one franchised Blockbuster store still in business in the entire country. The store is in Bend, Oregon, although it is unknown if the series will be set there.
Best known for her role as Det. Amy Santiago on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Fumero is currently shooting the indie comedy film Bar Fight with Rachel Bloom. She can also be heard giving a voice to her namesake character in Marvels’ animated series M.O.D.O.K. on Hulu.
