The Alexa Demie time-traveling memes are hilarious, but stop laughing for a second and consider this: What’s the surprise in learning she could be 29, rather than 24? Why does this matter?
A rumor that the Euphoria star is a few years older than previously reported had Twitter whirling yesterday. Photos Demie with the Kardashians, Grimes, Sky Ferreira, and Azealia Banks, seemingly taken in different eras with Demie looking a bit different in each shot, supposedly support the idea that the actress is ageless, maybe a vampire, “has lived a thousand lives” or is a time traveler.
Of course, then came the ‘shopped pics and out-of-context images used for additional “proof.”
Once the laughs subside, though, what are we left with? This is yet another example of our placing expectations on the physical appearance of women. If she’s 24, does she “look her age”? If she’s 29, does she look too young to be 29? What is a 24-year-old or a 29-year-old woman supposed to look like?
