Menudo Documentary Will Hit HBO Max After Premiering at Tribeca Festival

Menudo, the Puerto Rican boy band that hit it big in the 1980s with songs like “Quiero Ser” and “Like a Cannonball,” are making their way to HBO Max.

The four-part documentary Menudo: Forever Young by filmmakers Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) and Kristofer Ríos (Havana Skate Days) will debut on the streaming platform on June 23, 2022, less than two weeks after it premieres at the 2022 Tribeca Festival.

Two of the executive producers of the film are Cristina Costantini and Alex Fumero, who collaborated on the Netflix documentary Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado.

According to Deadline, the film will explore the rise and fall of the band and will confront the accusations of sexual misconduct against producer Edgardo Diaz, who formed the group in 1977. Diaz has denied the allegations.

“The Puerto Rican diaspora in New York played a critical role in the success of Menudo and its crossover in the U.S., shutting down traffic for blocks surrounding the band’s hotel and selling out Madison Square Garden on multiple occasions,” Soto said in a statement. “We couldn’t be more excited to premiere this series in their backyard at Tribeca and honor their contribution to the band’s legacy.”

Part of the band’s legacy is being the launching pad for its most famous band member, Ricky Martin, who joined the group in 1984 at the age of 12. Martin was one of 39 boys that were members of Menudo sometime between 1977 and 2009. He was with the group for five years before he aged out.
