Is Marvel reinventing the origin story of one of its characters to give him a Mexican background?

The rumor mill was spinning fast this past weekend when unconfirmed reports hit social media saying that Marvel’s aquatic superhero Namor the Sub-Mariner was going to shed his connection to Atlantis for another underwater kingdom closer to Mexico for the sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Even the verified profile that belongs to Marvel Comics Mexico retweeted rumors that when Namor makes his first appearance in Wakanda Forever later this year, he will have Mexican roots.

If the rumors turn out to be true, the writing may have already been on the wall since last summer when Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta (Narcos: Mexico) was cast in Wakanda Forever and gossip started spreading that he would take on the role of Namor.

Twitter users had plenty to say when they found out Marvel might be changing the origin story of Namor, who was first introduced to comic readers in 1939. Some thought it was a great way to continue to expand the Latine influence into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Xochitl Gomez’s America Chavez was recently introduced to audiences in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Oscar Isaac has done well as the title character in Disney+’s Moon Knight, so let’s keep it going, right? Don’t forget that Bad Bunny will also play El Muerto in a stand-alone Marvel movie for Sony Pictures.

The internet wouldn’t be the internet, however, without its detractors – mostly Twitter users who didn’t like the idea of Namor not hailing from Atlantis.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is scheduled to hit theaters on November 11, 2022.
