While fans are mourning Jane the Virgin’s departure from Netflix on September 5th, a Mexican version of the series may just be the respite that fans are seeking. La Historia de Juana is a Spanish-language telenovela that is based on the original Jane the Virgin (Juana la Virgen) that premiered in 2002 in Venezuela. The OG show told the story of Juana Perez, a young woman about to go to college who is accidentally artificially inseminated.

The new Mexican series follows the story of Juana Guadalupe Bravo, a twenty year old student with big dreams to graduate with an engineering degree and break the family curse of living with regret. During a regular health check-up, Juana is accidentally inseminated and becomes pregnant with the child of the sperm donor, Gabriel Rubio. An entanglement ensues when Juana meets and falls in love with Gabriel, causing the perfect storm of telenovela drama.

The American TV series Jane the Virgin follows the story of Jane, a young woman who is mistakenly inseminated with her boss’ child. The series, which has a Rotten Tomato score of 100%, originally aired on The CW for 5 seasons, and was based on the Venezuelan telenovela.

The new Mexican telenovela La Historia de Juana shares many other plot similarities with the American series, including an intense kidnapping scene that leaves viewers on the edge of their seats, comparable to the kidnapping of young Matteo by the Miami Kingpin, Sin Rostro in the last episode of season 1. And it also follows similar beats as the OG Venezuelan show with the lead characters interest in photography and the male leads work at a magazine.

La Historia de Juana originally launched in June 2024 and is airing now on Las Estrellas.
