The superhero feature Wonder Woman galvanized women across the globe last year, grossing over $800 million at the box office. Its sequel has been just as anticipated, if not more so considering its recent casting news. In the wake of actress Kristen Wiig being announced as the film’s villain Cheetah, it’s now being reported that Chilean actor Pedro Pascal has signed on for an undisclosed role.

Pascal is best known to audiences for his scene stealing performance as Oberyn Martell on HBO’s Game of Thrones. After his horrifyingly glorious exit from that show he garnered a lead role on the Netflix drug cartel drama Narcos for three seasons. Later this year he’ll star in Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk alongside Diego Luna, and he’s set to star in Netflix’s Triple Frontier opposite real life bestie, Oscar Isaac.

The casting for this Wonder Woman sequel has been eclectic, to say the least. Pascal’s casting intrigues because he’s remained an enigmatic and versatile performer. He hasn’t categorized himself into a type yet so there’s plenty of room for speculation on who his character is. The key word in the casting announcement is “key role,” so it stands to reason it’s possibly someone fighting alongside Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, or a co-conspirator opposite Kristen Wiig’s villain, Cheetah. Either way the Twitter response to this has been fierce. Where people were scratching their heads over Wiig, people – mainly women – are all atwitter in support.

It’s doubtful we’ll know much more right away. The Wonder Woman sequel currently has a release date of November 1, 2019.
