Soccer fans will get a chance to continue the fun after the 2014 World Cup ends when El Matador, the second original TV series to air on Robert Rodríguez‘s new TV Network El Rey, premieres this summer. Antonio “Matador” Bravo is a famous soccer player who, besides scoring goals and smiling for the paparazzi, leads a double life. It turns out that he’s also a CIA undercover agent who takes advantage of his playboy lifestyle and contacts with powerful people to carry out dangerous missions. In the leading role of the “Latino James Bond” is Texan actor Gabriel Luna (Spring Eddy) alongside his Aussie co-star Nicky Whelan.

Maverick writers Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin, who also are co-producers of the series, wrote the first episode — and who better than Robert Rodríguez to direct it? Even with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the creative team from Sleepy Hollow, Star Trek and Transformers behind it, we don’t know if this mashup between a high profile spy and a glamorous soccer player will really work. Just in case, try to spend this spring season watching a bunch of awesome James Bond flicks, drinking martinis, and then have a soccer movie marathon so you can be caught up and ready for for El Matador‘s first season kick off in July.
