Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez’s stock is rising higher and higher each day. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the Austin-based writer and director is rebooting his Spy Kids franchise with Skydance Media and Spyglass Media Group.
The original Spy Kids movie from 2001 starred Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara as the adventurous Cortez family. The franchise continued with Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams in 2002, Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over in 2003 and Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 2011.
Rodriguez also rebooted the franchise as an animated series, Spy Kids: Mission Critical, which ran for two seasons on Netflix. Now, Rodriguez will recalibrate the franchise and add another reboot to his growing list of projects.
After directing what many fans of The Mandalorian called one of the best episodes of the series last month, Rodriguez debuted his new family film We Can Be Heroes on Netflix where a reported 44 million households tuned in during Christmas week. A few days later, news came in that Netflix greenlit a sequel to the superhero movie.
Then came word that Rodriguez was developing a new Zorro series with Sofia Vergara in the title role and was co-executive producing the upcoming Star Wars series The Book of Boba Fett. Last week, Rodriguez also announced he was developing an animated series based on his 1996 action-horror flick From Dusk Till Dawn.
All these new ventures should keep Rodriguez and his fans busy for a while. Too bad the projects don’t include a start date for Machete Kills in Space.
